Microneedling Q & A

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic treatment that reduces the appearance of fine lines, large pores, and acne scarring while also tightening your skin for a rejuvenated appearance.

The treatment involves a device that has a roller with very thin and short needles, which is gently rolled over your skin in multiple directions. Microneedling is often used with a hyaluronic acid serum to ensure deep penetration of the nutrients to boost moisturization.

How does microneedling work?

Microneedling works by stimulating your body’s healing ability and pushing serums deep into your skin to optimize their effectiveness.

The expert aestheticians at Boulder Dermatology apply a hyaluronic acid serum to your face before using the handheld roller device. Then, as they move the needles over your skin, the serum is pushed into your skin to improve absorption and maximize its effect.

The device also makes tiny punctures in your skin that heal almost immediately but trigger your body’s natural healing response, flooding your skin with oxygen and nutrients to repair and build new cells including capillaries and collagen. The collagen plumps your skin from within and the fresh capillaries keep your skin and subdermal tissue nourished and healthy.

What happens during a microneedling treatment?

To begin your treatment, your aesthetician at Boulder Dermatology cleans your face and applies a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort. They then apply a serum to your face and run the needle device gently over your skin in multiple directions. Finally, they clean your face again and apply a moisturizing serum and sunscreen.

Your microneedling treatment should only take about 15 minutes. Your face may be slightly pink after your treatment, but this usually subsides within a couple of hours.

How should I take care of my skin after a microneedling treatment?

Microneedling is virtually painless and requires no downtime for recovery. As always, you should take care to avoid the sun and wear sunscreen. You may also want to avoid vigorous exercise for 24 hours after your treatment.
