Botox Q & A

What is BOTOX?

BOTOX is an injectable, highly purified toxin known as Clostridium botulinum. It’s best known for reducing the horizontal forehead lines and crow’s feet that develop as you age.

One of the primary causes of these lines and wrinkles is the muscle activity of your face; you contract them hundreds of time per day, etching lines into your face. BOTOX eases these muscle contractions so you notice a visible smoothing in lines and wrinkles.

BOTOX also has other applications, including relief for people who suffer from severe underarm sweating. The injections temporarily block the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands.

How long do the effects of BOTOX last?

In most people, BOTOX effectively smooths fine lines and wrinkles for three to four months. In cases of hyperhidrosis, the effects last about six months. To maintain your results, talk to Dr. Morrison, Ms. Collins, and Ms. Porter to discuss a regular treatment schedule.

Do BOTOX injections hurt?

BOTOX injections involve a very fine needle, so you might feel a slight pinch during the procedure. Most people tolerate the injections well and need no topical anesthetic or icing prior to the therapy. The entire procedure usually takes about 10 minutes.

Are there restrictions after BOTOX injections?

You can resume activity right after receiving injections. It may take up to two weeks for you to notice the full results of the injections applied to your face.

Some people experience minor pinpoint bruising following treatment, which fades within a day or two. You can wear makeup right after treatment, but you should avoid heavy workouts for 24 hours.

If you’ve had injections for hyperhidrosis, it may take up to four weeks to see a reduction in sweating.

Who is a candidate for BOTOX injections?

You might consider facial BOTOX injections if you’re bothered by the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Consult with Dr. Morrison if you’re bothered by excessive armpit sweating and haven’t been able to find relief with over-the-counter and prescription antiperspirants.
