Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is the medical term for an eyelid lift. As you get older and your body produces less collagen and elastin, your skin begins to get loose and sag, which can affect your eyelids.

When your eyelids droop, it can make you look tired and older than you are. Some people even find that their drooping eyelids disrupt their vision.

An eyelid lift removes excess skin from your upper eyelids and reduces bagginess in your lower eyelids. They are often used to treat:

  • Loose skin that causes drooping on your upper eyelid
  • Fatty deposits and bags under the eyes
  • Drooping lower eyelids

What happens during an eyelid lift?

You are sedated during your eyelid lift. Your doctor at Boulder Dermatology makes small incisions in the fold of your upper eyelid and on the inside of your lower eyelid to reduce the chance of visible scarring.

They remove any excess skin or pockets of fatty tissue to restore and lift the appearance of your eyelid. Your doctor closes the small incision and the whole procedure is usually complete within two hours.

What is recovery from blepharoplasty like?

After your eyelid lift is complete, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home. Your doctor gives you specific advice on how to take care of yourself while you recover. In general, most patients take a week off to recover.

There will be some bruising and swelling, but you should only experience minimal discomfort. You can apply cold packs every hour or so for the first day following your surgery. After the second day, you can apply warm compresses. You shouldn’t wear contact lenses or eye makeup for at least a week following surgery.

Who is a good candidate for eyelid lift surgery?

You should be in good health and not have any serious eye conditions. Eyelid lift surgery lifts your eyelids to give your eyes a more youthful and awake appearance. You may benefit from combining your eyelid lift with other treatments to reduce wrinkles around your eyes or loose skin elsewhere on your face.

What are the benefits of an eyelid lift?

Blepharoplasty can improve your appearance and, in some cases, reduce vision impairment by removing excess skin that obstructs your vision. It’s a relatively quick procedure that can help you look younger, reversing the effects of collagen loss around your eyes.
