John R. Steinbaugh, MD

John Steinbaugh was born in Boulder and grew up in Louisville. He joined Dr. Paul Rickard at Boulder Dermatology in 1985, where they worked together until Dr. Rickard’s retirement in 1996.

Dr. Steinbaugh graduated from Louisville High School and received a BS degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, in 1971. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He graduated from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1975. He was elected member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the Scholastic Medical Society. He then went on to complete a three year family practice residency at the University of Colorado in Denver and was Chief Resident at the university’s Department of Family Practice. Upon completion of his family practice residency, he joined the faculty of the University of Colorado Family Practice in Greeley where he remained until 1982 when he began his dermatology residency at the University of North Carolina, which he completed in 1985.

In 1990, Dr. Steinbaugh took a sabbatical from Boulder Dermatology to train in Mohs Surgery with Dr. Rex Amonette at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, where for an entire year he focused on the specialized techniques of the program. Dr. Steinbaugh is one of only 300 physicians worldwide to complete a fellowship program and be recognized as a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Micrographic and Cutaneous Surgery.

Presently, in addition to his full time practice, Dr. Steinbaugh is an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the University of Colorado Health Science Center in Denver and is the director of dermatologic surgery at Denver Health Medical Center where he teaches residents on a weekly basis. He was voted Volunteer Physician of the Year for 2005 by the Denver Health medical staff for his teaching and patient care efforts.

Dr. Steinbaugh is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology, American College of Mohs Micrographic and Cutaneous Surgery, the American Society of Dermatological Surgery, the International Society of Dermatological Surgery, and the Colorado Dermatology Society. He served as president of the Boulder County Medical Society in 1995. He has lectured about dermatologic surgery in Italy, Israel, Vietnam, and Hungary, as well as taught surgery courses at national meetings of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Dr. Steinbaugh resides in Boulder with his wife, Kathy, and their three college-age children: Adam, Jake, and Michelle. In his leisure time, there is nothing he enjoys more than flyfishing for trout—an activity he has pursued with enthusiasm in Russia, Alaska, and especially in Colorado and Wyoming.
